Zuyomernon Isn’t Basketball (It’s) Court Chess
I’ve played it. You’ll feel the difference in your first ten seconds.
Zuyomernon isn’t standard basketball. It’s a distinct game mode with its own rhythm and rules.
The goal? Score baskets and hold zones. Not just shoot.
Control.
There are three Control Zones. Marked circles near each hoop and one at center court. Hold them to earn Zuyomernon Points.
Each zone lights up when your team controls it. (They glow faintly. Feels weird.
It’s usually 3v3 on a smaller court. About 70% the size of regulation. Less space means less room for solo runs.
In a good way.)
More room for reading your teammate’s eyes.
Dribbling flashiness won’t save you here. Positioning does. Timing does.
Calling out switches before the other team moves does.
You’re not just guarding a person (you’re) guarding space. And space talks back.

That’s where games get won.
Zuyomernon Setup: Court, Gear, and Getting Started
I drew the first control circle in chalk on a cracked high school parking lot. It worked.
Zuyomernon needs three things: two mini-hoops (not full-size), four colored cones, and three painted circles. Two for players, one for the ball reset.
The scoring gates are just hula hoops taped to poles at waist height. Power zones? Two 5-foot squares near each gate.
Step in one, you get double points if you pass before shooting.
We used old basketballs. No special gear needed. Just mark the zones clearly.
If you don’t have paint, use duct tape or rope. One time I used sidewalk chalk and a garden hose to rinse it off after. (Rain ruins everything.)
Teams are three-on-three. Roles rotate every five minutes. No permanent “Zone Defender.” You pick one before each quarter.
But if someone’s always guarding, they’re bored. And bored players miss passes.
Game starts with the ball in the center control circle. One player from each team taps it. Like tip-off (but) only after both say “Zuyo.” Yes, really.
You want fair possession? Flip a coin. Or let the quieter team choose first.
They usually ask for the left gate.

Use shoes. No whistle? Clap twice.
It works. I’ve seen it.
How Movement Changes Everything
I move the ball with my hands (dribble) or pass. No sliding. No hopping.
Two steps max after catching it. (And yes, I count in my head sometimes.)
Zuyomernon zones aren’t just painted lines. You hold one by standing still for three seconds (or) passing out of it cleanly. Or scoring from inside it.
Do any of those? The zone locks to your team.
Opponents can’t touch you in a control zone. Not even a brush. Steal the ball outside it.
Block shots only if you’re vertical. Foul there? Free throws.
And possession flips.
Possession shifts fast. After a score? Opponent inbound.
Turnover? Other team gets it. Foul in a control zone?
You lose it and they shoot.
Teamwork isn’t nice (it’s) required. You can’t hold a zone alone. Someone has to call it out.
Someone has to cut when you pause. Someone has to know where the open zone is before you do.

How Zuyomernon Really Scores

I hate when games pretend scoring is simple. Zuyomernon isn’t basketball (and) pretending it is wastes your time.
You can shoot hoops. But a basket only gives you 1 point. Anywhere.
No arc, no angle, no “three-point line” nonsense. (It’s not that kind of game.)
There’s a power zone. Small circle near the center. Shoot from inside it?
That’s 2 points. Step one inch out? Back to 1.
Simple. Brutal.
Zuyomernon Points come from control. Hold any zone for 10 seconds? You get 1 point.
Pass through three zones in sequence without dropping it? Another point. Miss one link in the chain?
Nothing. (Yes, it’s annoying. Yes, it’s fair.)
Steal the ball and score within 5 seconds? Bonus point. Do it twice in under 30 seconds?
Combo score (+2.) These aren’t rare. They’re expected.
Winning? First team to 15 wins. Or hold all three zones for 20 straight seconds.
Or (if) time runs out. You just have more points.
No overtime. No tiebreakers. Just score or lose.
This is why I prefer Zuyomernon over traditional hoops. It rewards awareness, timing, and pressure. Not just shooting form.

I watch my teammate’s feet more than their hands. That tells me if they’re tired or locked in.
Practice isn’t repetition. It’s asking: What broke last time? Then fixing that.
